According to the cemetery description on Find A Grave, and the cemetery gates themselves, Spring Hill Cemetery was established in the summer of 1879 with the burial of Jackson Kline. However, there is no marker at this cemetery for Jackson.
The description also mentions William and Lucetta Wycoff deeding the land to the Directors of the Spring Hill Cemetery in 1882, but it’s unclear what land was deeded because the 2-acre cemetery had already been established three years prior.
The land was officially surveyed as a cemetery in 1881 and was reported as one of the year’s major accomplishments for Sumner County.
Every cemetery in Conway Springs has the graves facing west, and this one is not an exception. We went early in the morning, and while it was a beautiful (and hot) summer day, most graves were difficult to photograph due to the position of the sun.
The oldest marked stone in the cemetery is for Robert Gant, the 18-year-old son of J.M. and Julia Gant. He died after a short illness, reported to be “fever.”
There are 45 graves documented on Find A Grave, but there are likely more that have not yet been posted there.
